Hey Rich! Beautiful work my friend.. and great interview I just read in the newsletter. You have a gift in art and in words.. Keep on creating! :)
Richard Hawk has answered to the roles of painter, illustrator, instructor, art director and designer. Rich's expressive figurative paintings capture the inner life of his subjects. Strong design and intensity of expression create the energy and excitement for which his work is known. With roots in the traditions of watermedia, he now paints extensively in oil on canvas as well.
Rich's paintings are in a number of collections, have won awards in many national and international exhibitions and been featured in The Artist’s Magazine. From time to time Rich teaches workshops for other artists in the San Diego area.
Founder of COPPPERHAND Studio, he also works in the unusual medium of oxidized copper, using natural acids to create images in patina on the surface of pure copper sheets.
Born in New York City, and a long time resident of the Washington, DC area, he now maintains his studio Escondido, California.
Rich’s work is represented by Coffee Gallery in Spring Lake, Michigan, and Trios Gallery in Solana Beach, California, in addition to theartgallerist.com online.
I like to concentrate on painting the human spirit, through the human figure.
Truth and beauty lie beneath the surface, and are in evidence in the human animal, if we look deeply enough. All my paintings are about the same thing – the interior lives of human beings. You could call it the life of the mind, the heart, the spirit, the soul, any combination of these. We’re all looking to make sense of things, how we exist and move in life, love, and time. The search and the answers lie within.
The outer self - interpreted with the freedom of an artist’s brush, and co-created with instinct, the power of intention, and at times the contribution a higher power - can reveal our innermost natures. Somehow, paint has an extraordinary ability to communicate the mysteries and intangible essences of human experience. I feel that this most ancient of mediums (oil painting) is still unsurpassed in the ability to represent the essence of being human, even in this age of technology.
Almost exclusively, women are the subjects of my paintings. They are simply more expressive, more complex, more sensual. Their personalities have range and paradox. The beauty and grace of a woman is often simultaneously powerful and fragile, like the experience of life itself.
Artist and viewer together explore, honor, and celebrate wonderful mysteries of life.
University of Iowa, University of Maryland, studies with a number of accomplished painters throughout the years, such as Don Andrews and Carla O'Connor.
I was pleased to have been selected by The Artist's Magazine as Artist of the Month in August 2010.
