ZHANG Fan was born in the Guangdong Province, China, in 1973 in an art family. His artistic training was initiated by his father as early as when he was a little boy. ZHANG Fan’s father, ZHANG Wen Bo, is one of the founders of Guangzhou Watercolor Study Association and the major founder of Guangdong Museum of Art. ZHANG Fan attended art school at his fifteen to begin systemic studies of fine art, and then further studied in The Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1995. During his studies, ZHANG Fan was also instructed by his father’s teacher -- WANG Zhao Min, one of the greatest contemporary watercolor artists in China. ZHANG Fan was inspired a lot by WANG’s theory of ‘truth and strength make beautiful artwork’, influencing his artwork later on. ZHANG Fan is an artist of watercolor, as well as a professional interior designer. Being an interior designer, ZHANG Fan loves to study architectures of traditional and colonial styles. This has been the theme of some of his paintings. Being a watercolor artist, ZHANG Fan is inspired by every detail in the nature, and he tries to be faithful to the nature in his artwork.
I was inspired a lot by WANG’s theory of ‘truth and strength make beautiful artwork’, influencing and empowering my artwork a lot later on. I also consider watercolor to be a best media to joint the East and the West culture. Therefore, a blend of Chinese Painting and Oil Painting become a prominent feature of my watercolor artworks.
