Description:

Portrait commissions vary in size and medium. This 'Young, Inquisitive, Child' is an example of a portrait rendered with grey tones in colored pencil on 11x14 rag art paper. Other mediums I use are full color, colored pencils and watercolor - sometimes a mixture of all. Portraits make beautiful gifts (giclee prints can be made in addition to the original), become family heirlooms and I make them affordable for ordinary families. I work from photographs and descriptions provided by the client. My goal is to find and express a part of the subject's personality that will be recognized by family members.

Lynn Hosegood

Biography

Lynn Hosegood has been on a creative journey for over 25 years. Her medium of choice is watercolor which she uses it in a very painterly manner with high value contrast and intense color spots. After graduating with a studio arts degree from Salisbury State College (now Salisbury University) in 1985 Lynn worked as a portrait artist and turned her attention to the landscape and architectural subject matter when she returned to her native England for three years. While there she studied miniature painting and was accepted as a member and exhibited with The Hilliard Society, The Society of Limners and she was included in group shows with The Royal Miniature Society and London’s Westminster Gallery and Mall Galleries. Working from her Williamsburg, Virginia home studio, Lynn now works on children’s book illustrations, paintings for her print series and large watercolors for regional, national and international juried shows and competitions. Her main focus is the large watercolor paintings resourced from her travels throughout Europe, Singapore, Caribbean and Central America. Her prints are found locally in Williamsburg and Jamestowne at Barnes and Noble, Merchants Square, Jamestown/Yorktown Foundation, William and Mary Alumni Association. Also at college campus bookstores at Roanoke College, Hollins University, University of Mary Washington, Salisbury University. Lynn teaches classes in Watercolor and Principles and Elements of Design at the Williamsburg Landing and Gloucester Arts on Main, Virginia

Artist Statement

I love the process of painting, especially since I have found my niche in my travel paintings. Contrary to most art methods and philosophies, I am an analytical painter. All my work starts with 100's of digital images shot on my travels. Browsing my images, I am prompted to start a painting project with recalling the experience, referring to sketches, creating the concept, using my images and finding bits and pieces from maybe 10-12 digital pictures. My painting projects then become a series of questions, I jot in my notebook with sketches until all is clear: the concept, the stylizing, the composition, the color temperature, contrasts and palette. Of course there are adjustments along the way and even new starts but I feel blessed to have the journey as my life's focus.

Awards

Recent awards include Best in Show at Virginia Watercolor Society, 2008 Juried Show; VWS Award of Merit, 2011. She has been juried into: The Transparent Watercolor Society of America, 2009, 2010 Kenosha, Wisconsin; Southern Watercolor Society, Columbus, Georgia, 2009, 2011. She has also been juried into North Light Books, Splash 11(2010) and Splash 12(2011). She was also given an award by the Colonial Dames of America for her illustration work for ‘Stonewall Jackson’s Black Sunday School’.
