Artist Statement
My paintings in both acrylic and watercolor are created by building up thin layers of color that I let dry before applying another layer; the very darkest areas may have 30 to 40 layers of color. I started working this way in watercolor to create smooth curving spaces with textures derived from the surface of the paper and the nature of the pigment. I discovered that working this way gave me the opportunity to develop the signature luminosity of my paintings.
I love working in watercolor and I use a 300lb French watercolor paper with a medium surface. Watercolor is wonderful for its subtlety, transparency and luminosity but it does have size restrictions both in terms of sizes of paper available and framing considerations. Working in acrylic gives me the freedom to wok on larger pieces which I love.
The beauty of the natural world astounds me and has been my major focus throughout my career. I chose particular subjects that take my breath away and paint series of work to more deeply explore what fascinates me.
I have been painting and exhibiting my work in both public and private galleries for over twenty years. My work in watercolour on paper and acrylic on canvas is included in private, corporate and public collections in Canada and in private collections in the U.S. and Europe.
