Michael Long's artistic journey has been a life-long commitment. A father photographer and mother painter put him on the creative path early in life. He went on to earn a MFA degree from the University of Colorado and a BFA degree from the College of Santa Fe. He also studied painting at the Art Students League in New York under the direction of Richard Pousette-Dart. He has taught widely including Santa Fe Photography Workshops, Eastern New Mexico University, University of Hawaii, Santa Fe Community College, Dar al-Kalima College (Bethlehem, Palestine), Austin Museum of Art, and Rockland Center for the Arts (West Nyack, New York). He recently was an adjunct professor at University of Colorado teaching photography, drawing, painting, mixed media, and sculpture. He has exhibited extensively nationally. International exhibitions include Italy, Netherlands, Columbia, and Mexico.
Artist Statement
Michael Long explores the intersection between the material of object and the immaterial of light and space. In his work, which is greatly influenced by painting, he nullifies the distinction between realism and illusion. Through in-camera techniques Long removes the immediacy of specific recognition and instigates perspective that resonates beyond the obvious.
