Ruth Gooch
Biography
Ruth is a contemporary artist, though her preferred medium of encaustic is ancient. Her love of the physical process of painting with beeswax transcends into the art itself. With translucent, deep rich colors her work comes across as organic, serene, and tranquil.
Although Ruth began her interest in art with photography, her journey has led her to the art of encaustic. Encaustic is an ancient medium, now coming into its own in the modern era. As the earliest painting method it was practiced by Greek and Egyptian artists thousands of years ago. Encaustic means to burn in. The paint consists of all natural materials; beeswax, pigment and Darmar tree resin. The paint is melted and applied in its molten form. Ruth’s paintings are created with many layers of wax, as many as 40 layers, painted with a brush, fusing with a torch after each layer is applied.
Like many artists who work in encaustic, Ruth is intrigued by the physical process itself. The process infuses the physical act of painting with the naturalness of the materials. The painting involves all of her senses; the scent of beeswax melting, the sound of the torch hissing, the physical touch and tactile feel of the wax. Ruth finds the work cathartic and looses herself completely in the physical process of the work.
Artist Statement
As a full time studio artist, when I am working with encaustic, I become completely involved in the process. My hope is that my love for the process transcends into the art itself. That the Zen like feeling of the actual painting comes through in the art and speaks to the viewer of my work as serene, tranquil and introspective.
