MARTIN STEPHEN is an artist and musician living in Cambridgeshire. He was born in London, studied electronics at Nottingham University graduating with an honours degree. The artist subsequently worked as an consultant to industry and commerce for 'Just in Time' manufacturing and finance whilst building a reputation for sound and music composition with a particular skill for '1st take' improvisation. Martin began to paint in 2010. The artist regularly exhibits in Cambridgeshire collaborating with like-minded artists and musicians, building a network of contacts within the arts. He also performs multi-media live event shows incorporating theatrical props, and lights together with screen projection of video art. Martin describes himself as romantic and spiritual. Individualistic. Working outside the mainstream, with inspiration from the 20th century modern masters in particular : Kandinsky, Arshile Gorky, Joan Miro, Alan Davie, Hundertwasser, the abstract expressionists, cubists and surrealist painters.
My abstract expressionist paintings create surrealist visual imagery from the subconscious mind. Ancient rock carvings, mysticism, spiritual communion with nature, music, dance, shapes and symbols form the backdrop to my work. I work with rhythmic creativity, atmospheric mood and a highly melodic sense when composing in sound and bring a similar romance to art. I am inspired to create from imagination. To ask...how can my work be most expressive? The trust my instincts. To strive for romance, mystique, an otherworldliness to my pictures. Impressionistic yet touching on darker moods that lie beyond first glance, insights of the cave artist, the alchemist, the shaman, linking us metaphorically with mysteries and spiritual forces normally beyond our apprehension.
Exhibited widely in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, United Kingdom. Invited to exhibit at the Brick Lane Gallery London and elsewhere in 2013.
