Fostering an interest in art since early childhood, Hugh discovered the beauty, and challenge, of watercolor in 1975. Raised in Chicago and later moving to central Illinois, Hugh's subject matter quickly became the familiar farms, landscapes and seasons of the Midwest. Landscapes of stately trees, aging barns and changing seasons most often find their way to his paper. The earth tones and rural scenes give Hugh's work a uniquely serene quality. Captured with a sense of realism, a vanishing countryside and era is preserved, to carry us away from the business of daily life. The close attention to detail displays his passion for, and mastery of, this medium.
“My hope is that as you view my watercolors you are drawn into the work by the details of images often overlooked in our hectic lives. Each time you view the work you may make new discoveries. Perhaps the painting will also bring you a sense of rest and serenity provided by the setting as I felt when creating the piece.”
Having exhibited in many art fairs throughout the past years, his watercolors have won numerous awards. Paintings of local scenes have been chosen for the cover of the Wheaton City Calendar and for permanent display at the DuPage County Courthouse and Wheaton City Hall. This same attention to detail is found in the “House Portraits” Hugh paints. Having painted over 700 commissions, these finely detailed renderings have included not only many homes but also pets, boats, cars, a train and other personal items that are not only original pieces of art, but have also become treasured personal keepsakes. As part of his professional career Hugh regularly gives watercolor demonstrations throughout the Midwest. Every age group from elementary school students to civic groups and retirement communities have been captivated by his unique demonstrations often accompanied by classical music. Demonstrating the tools and techniques that give his work it's distinctive quality, he conveys the beauty of watercolor with the passion of someone who loves what he does.
